The piano pieces are beautiful…however, I find the *zen* audio lessons too long and irritating.. (Obviously the opposite of what they are supposed to achieve.) The videos sometimes take far too long to load… and are not long enough…

I’m finally learning how to play music in a relaxed state. Normally, I’m a nervous wreck. I try to hard.

This course has the potential to be really great. Certainly the concept is brilliant, as I’m a great fan of the meditative approach to life. But it feels thrown together and poorly constructed. For sure it is not linear, but the circular nature is frustrating. The Udemy lecture sends you to YouTube, YouTube sends you to the website, the website sends you to the Udemy lecture where you started. I got quite giddy running round and round in circles. On top of that, several lectures recommend “watch the video” but with no video and no link to video, and no instruction of where to find said video. I persevered, even though it felt like a “curate’s egg”, or a dog’s breakfast. The penny finally dropped about halfway through Inner Sojourn, and I never looked back. This is really good (and could be so much better with a little more careful organisation).

I’ve been a horrible piano student since age 5 or 6. I just hated that thing. I was lured to this class more for the meditation part than the piano… but I find myself enjoying it. Who knows, maybe I’ll learn something! Update 1: Three, maybe 4 weeks into this course, working my way through Inner Sojourn. I am not quite sure how to describe what it is I am learning in terms of piano playing, as I’ve had enough piano background to play that piece without trouble… but I think I am learning how to listen to what I am playing. What I am in love with though is the meditative approach, and the sense of profound peace I get with each practice session. I never thought I’d be looking forward to practicing the piano!

Hello Thomas,

I really like your course. Never I had imagined that learning a sophisticated new skill like piano can happen in such a relaxed and enjoyable way. This makes your course very unique.

The course has pre-written songs like Inner Sojourn and Reflecting Pond, it gives me tools like Chimes of Ling Lun and the excursions to do improvisations and it helps me to learn some sight reading without creating pressure and stress. Great combination.

I highly recommend this course.

Thomas Rheingans’ course is a very unique and wonderful way to learn play the piano. This course provides an approach to learning the piano without the internal mental stress associate with such endeavors. It provides a foundation for exploring ones creative spirit and covers music reading through improvisation. The combination of lucid learning, meditation and learning is deeply appreciated. Looking forward to more courses from Thomas in the future and am thankful that I purchased this course. I now use this approach to learning and playing. Thanks you for a wonderful experience!

This is the most amazing musical course I have ever taken. It teaches a kind of discipline only achieved through patience. I have taken piano lessons from many different types of instructors, but the Piano Zen Method is by far the best I have ever experienced. Why? It builds on a stress-free foundation which is enjoyable for both the pianist and the listener. So much is learned in so little time, it is indeed, as the instructor says, effortless effort. I highly recommend using the Stillpoint Method of approach to any learner of any age group including those wanting to retrain and reorient themselves to the piano in a better more beautiful way.

This piano course is truly different. It puts me into a very relaxed place to listen to the lessons and follow along at my keyboard. I love the music I’ve learned so far. It’s beautiful, original, and flowing. I think it sounds pretty advanced, actually, even though it’s simple to learn in these lessons. If you want a relaxing way to learn the piano take this course. You will learn some beautiful songs too!

Very different and interesting course. I started this course a few months back and then quit for awhile. Now I am back into it and enjoying the meditation and piano lessons very much. After only a few lessons I feel I am finally getting in the flow. Looking forward to more courses that you create. Thanks Thomas!

I have to say I am in shock and awe with this program. I went into this course knowing nothing about music notes, theory, keys. I knew absolutely nothing. I have just finished the first 2 sections and had a profound experience. I have learned so much in such a short period of time. The way Thomas teaches really hits you on a subconscious level and material sticks. In slowing down, he taught me how I can learn and experience more. This course is an emotional and spiritual journey. Along the way you learn the piano. One word sums this course up.. “Beautiful”. Thomas, I hope to see many more courses from you. Thank you!

this is soooo great. Wish I had started this method before giving myself frozen shoulder a few years back. I’m sure Glenn Gould must have had Frozen shoulder. I LOVE this course! Its what the doctor ordered due to major family stress I’m under, now I can practice and heal and zen at the same time! LOVE IT!!

Too much Zen and not enough piano. Nevertheless, it was a great effort.

I’m new to keyboards and new to UDEMY. And while in my enthusiasm for learning the piano, I’ve also enrolled in other great piano courses here, they all tend to cover the usual styles we know and love. But Piano Zen is unique as far as course material. First, it’s got a whole other vibe, which I was immediately grabbed by. To my ear this has the kind of associations for me that are a mixed bag of Japanese, new age, dream anime film score, and yes, Zen quality as well. This definitely could go quite meditative. Did for me. (Listen to a sample and you’ll see how it strikes you.) But in addition to loving the sound, the beginner in me thought this could have me sounding rather authentic comparatively soon. There’s a whole lot of material with books, slides and descriptions, good audio and video such that it very much felt I was being guided close up. I can’t rave highly enough. Great course – a real gem.
