What is the Piano Zen Method?

The Piano Zen Method is a relaxing and contemplative approach to the art of playing the piano.   The Piano Zen Method is a fascinating journey of self-discovery for beginning piano students as they learn to see, hear, and feel their music in unique ways.  The journey begins as the students learn to quiet their minds and expand their awareness while playing the piano.

How is the Piano Zen Method taught over the internet? 

The Piano Zen Method is primarily an audio-based instruction program using a specially designed 1,200 page virtual lesson book.  The virtual lessons integrate audio and printed materials from the Piano Zen lesson book with supplementary videos. The experience can feel like a piano lesson blended with a tai chi or yoga class.

The most intriguing aspect is that the Piano Zen audio lessons are like having your own personal Piano Zen teacher right there by your side, guiding you through every step of your piano practice.

Students simply log-in to their Piano Zen account and take lessons at the website. The Piano Zen website keeps track of student’s progress so that they can pick up where the left off.

What are the origins of the Piano Zen Method?

The Piano Zen Piano Method began simply as a personal practicing technique Thomas Rheingans developed so that he could practice the piano more efficiently and effectively.  However, the results were so remarkable and mysterious that Rheingans began to look deeper into the process.

The Piano Zen Method offered a unique way to experience a more balanced mind and body connection.  It also became clear that this Method could help beginning piano students explore music at the piano in a more personal and profound way right from the start.

Can beginning piano students take the classes? 

Yes. Absolutely! This version of the Piano Zen Method is focused primarily on beginning students with very little to no piano training at all. Beginning students of all ages can take the classes including young children with the parental guidance, teenagers, and adults.

How is this Eastern-inspired balance between mind and body achieved in the Piano Zen Method? 

The Piano Zen Method offers a different way to learn the piano.  It is a Method that embraces mindfulness and multi-sensory awareness.  Many of the Piano Zen audio lesson contain a relaxation session that helps students soften and slow down their minds.  When the student softens the mind, the body slows down and relaxes, and this state of heightened awareness elevates the effectiveness of piano training.

Unfortunately, most beginning piano students practice the piano with an extreme amount of tension.  These students also can be overly critical and analytical about their piano practicing o the point where it becomes impossible to achieve the results they want.  Frustration and tension work against their goals to play the piano well.

Who is William Longfellow Emerson?

He is a virtual character that comes from the Piano Zen fantasy novel.  He lives in the City of Nightingale. As a boy, he found inspiration from his Piano Zen teacher Rosa Carreño. He studied with her for 12 years and became a skilled pianist and Piano Zen teacher.  Rosa Carreño persuaded William to bring the secretive Piano Zen teachings out into the open so that beginning students all over the world could enjoy the unique piano training.  William is the instructor for the on-line Piano Zen training classes.
